Q I am not an Australian Resident or Citizen. Can I still apply?

A

You will still be eligible to apply unless Australian residency or citizenship is an essential requirement specifically stated in the Selection Criteria or advertisement.

However, should your application be successful, it will be necessary for you to obtain the appropriate visa/work rights to enter Australia in order to accept the offer of employment. The University will require that you provide evidence of the visa/work rights prior to finalising your offer of employment

Q Will the University sponsor my visa application?

A

Depending on the merits of each case, the University may agree to sponsor your application. Visas which sponsorship are applicable for are Permanent Residency Visas and Temporary Residency Visas including Business Visa (457).

Sponsorship is not applicable for a Visiting Academic Visa.

The University will lodge the relevant sponsorship papers with the Department of Immigration and citizenship in Sydney . It is necessary for the University’s sponsorship to be approved prior to you lodging an application, so you should not proceed without our advice.

Q Where can I find out what Visas I will need?

A

The Recruiter will be able to give general information about visa requirements. Each case will have individual factors to consider.

We advise that you speak to the Migration Officers in a relevant Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate. Further information can be found at: http://www.immi.gov.au

Q If selected for an interview, will I need to travel to Wollongong ? What if I am unable to travel to Wollongong to be interviewed?

A

Depending on the position, you may be required to travel to Wollongong to attend the interview and/or meetings. If so, please discuss travel requirements and arrangements with the Recruiter.

However, the Selection Committee may opt to conduct an interview via telephone conference or video conference. A normal dial tone phone will be sufficient for the interview. The Recruiter will request contact telephone / video link details from you and confirm the time of the interview taking into account any time differences between the locations.

Q Will the University pay for my travel costs to attend the interview?

A

Whilst the responsibility to attend the interview rests with the candidate, in most cases, the University will reimburse any significant costs incurred in travelling to Wollongong.

However, you should clarify this with the Recruiter to avoid any potential issues.

Q Will the University offer relocation assistance?

A

Depending upon the position you are taking with the University you may be eligible for relocation assistance. Not all positions will be eligible for relocation assistance. The University guideline outlines the assistance given in accordance with the location from which you are relocating:

  • Relocation Policy

Q If offered a role, will I have to migrate to Wollongong ? What about my family?

A

Depending on the term/length of your appointment, you may not have to migrate immediately.

Relocating to another country or location is a big decision. We encourage that you speak with your family/friends to decide if that is the right move for you on a career and personal basis. Finding out as much as you can about the place you are relocating will help you reach that decision.

This website provides some links to the information about Wollongong and Australia in general. You should research into facilities and issues that may be important/relevant to your family such as schooling and employment prospects for other members of your family.

It is important to note that in most cases, the offer of employment cannot be for longer than the validity of your visa.

This FAQ only outlines a few of the more general questions that are asked and may help in addressing some of your initial queries. Please do not hesitate to speak to Recruiter or Contact Officer if you have specific issues to discuss.

Please also refer to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship for more comprehensive information.
