APPLYING FOR JOBS AT UOW - Step by Step Guide

This is a guide to show the stages in a typical recruitment process. You can use this to track the status of your application.

Step One  
   
Review Position and Selection Criteria    
   
Speak to Contact Officer or Recruiter to clarify any issues/queries    
   
Address Selection Criteria (as directed in the advertisement)
Step Two
 
   
Submit application online Step Three All applications received by Recruitment will be formally acknowledged. Contact the Recruiter if you have not heard from us within 2 weeks of the closing date.
   
Application submitted to Selection Committee for shortlisting Step Four Not shortlisted -
You will be notified formally. Contact the Recruiter if you have not heard from us within 2 weeks of the initial acknowledgement letter.
   
If Shortlisted -
Recruiter will contact and confirm arrangements to attend interview.
   
   
Attend Interview and other Selection activities. If Unsuccessful - Informed formally by Recruiter. You may contact Chair/Recruiter for feedback if required.
   
If Successful - You will be contacted and offer conveyed.    



DETAILED STEPS

Step 1Step 1: Advertisement

The Advertisement only provides a broad outline of the position. You should refer to the Position Description and /or the Position Classification Standard and the Selection Criteria for more detailed information.

Read through the Position Description / Position Classification Standard and Selection Criteria. Familiarise yourself with the requirements of the position. Any questions should be directed to the Contact Officer or Recruiter as identified in the advertisement.

For Academic staff the Position Classification Standard can be found on the UOW website

 


Step 2Step 2: The Application

We suggest that your application includes:

  • A Cover Letter
  • A response addressing the Selection Criteria
  • Your updated Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Names and contact details of referees. Please state if we have your permission to contact them.

 

Cover Letter:

You should clearly state which position you are applying for (remember to quote the reference number) and in your cover letter, provide a brief overview of why you believe you are suitable for the position including main attributes, skills and experience. Please refer to our tips page.

 

Selection Criteria:

In addressing the Selection Criteria, show how you meet each of the specified essential selection criteria. Provide clear and concise examples of actual work that you have performed. Please refer to our tips page.
 

EXAMPLE:

Essential Criteria: Demonstrated ability to deal with staff at all levels of the organisation.

Response: In my current role, I not only deal with my peers, providing policy and procedural advice, I also provide financial information and advice to senior staff within my Division, including the General Manager and Director.

Your CV should include qualifications, work experience, employment history, training courses undertaken, and other relevant experience.

 

 

Referees:

In your application, please list the names and contact details including phone, fax and email (where applicable) of at least 2 referees that we may contact regarding your work history. These referees should have a good knowledge of your work performance and have supervised you in a current or previous role.

It is a good idea to advise your referees that you are applying for a certain position and it is often helpful if you provide them with a copy of the advertisement and position description.

We will be contacting referees prior to any offers being made. All offers of employment will be subject to satisfactory verbal reference checks.

Should you be successful in obtaining an interview, your referees may be asked to provide a written referee report.

 

 


Step 3Step 3: How to submit your application

The best way to apply for a position at UOW is via our online form. View the current positions available, click on the DETAILS link to view the details for the position you are interested in, then click the APPLY ONLINE button to fill in an online form. You can upload supporting documents as part of the online application process

 


Step 4Step 4: What happens to your application

All applications are acknowledged after the closing date.

If you do not receive notification, we suggest that you follow up to ensure that your application was received.

Within two to three weeks of the closing date (depending on the availability of Selection Committee members), the Selection Committee will decide which candidates will be interviewed. If you are successful in obtaining an interview you will be contacted by telephone by the Recruiter. If unsuccessful, you will be notified by mail.

After the interviews have been held, the successful candidate will be made a verbal offer (followed by a written offer) and if unsuccessful, in most cases, you will be notified by phone.

Feedback from interviews can be obtained from either the Recruiter or Chairperson of the Selection Committee.
