Lynne Wright - EED   Garry Hoban - Education

"I have worked at the University of Wollongong for 17 years. It is a great place to work and the opportunities have been countless. I can honestly say that each of the four positions I have held at the University have been rewarding and challenging. I have been able to take advantage of many opportunities on offer, and as a result I have progressed through the organisation to hold a senior position. When I first started working here my children were much younger so the flexible working conditions were a great help. Being able to start a little later or finish a bit earlier some days made being a working mum much easier. Now that the children aren't at home I use the mornings to go to the University gym or swimming pool before work.

Wollongong is a suprise to most people who haven't been here, the beaches, restaurants, the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, and Sydney is only an hour away. I won't be moving!"

"I commenced work at the University of Wollongong in 1998 after 8 years at Charles Sturt University. I have enjoyed working at UOW because there are plenty of opportunities here with lots of support. Both my research interest and my teaching interest have been well supported here, and as soon as I arrived I was welcomed into a research group. It showed me that UOW values both high quality teaching and research.

My wife and I have lived in several different places including Vancouver, Sydney, Bathurst, Penang and Girilambone. Wollongong is the best place we have lived in because it has what we call a 'city-country balance'. It is small enough to have most things accessible within 10-15 minutes drive like a country town but still has the facilities of a city. Also, Sydney is only an hour away. In particular there are some great beaches and nature walks very close by which makes you feel that you are not living in a city.

The University itself ranks highly across the country in terms of both research and teaching. Again it is just the right size, being large enough to have all the facilities of a modern university but small enough so that you get to know people across the whole university. This is always helpful for collaborative research and making the most of facilities such as the library, research office, learning development and sporting facilities. There is indeed a 'community' atmosphere at the University of Wollongong and staff work hard at maintaining it"

"I was very impressed with the professional and timely way in which the whole recruitment process was organised.

Throughout the application, interview and selection processes, I was in regular contact with University Recruitment Team whose approachable and helpful manner helped to make the whole process less daunting.  Their friendly efficiency helped to give me a very positive impression of the University generally."

"All stages of the selection process were dealt with promptly and I was kept informed of the progress of each stage.   As an interstate applicant, I was concerned about how I might get to Wollongong for an interview, how I might find the University in an city with which I was unfamiliar and so on.  However, the University Recruitment Team looked after all of these arrangements for me, including organising transport between Sydney Airport and the University."

"I am very grateful also for the assistance provided and for the concern shown with regard to my move to Wollongong.   Moving to another state is not something that can be undertaken lightly and the efforts to help me find a suitable removal system, to check that the move is going well and just to keep in touch generally have been very much appreciated and have made me feel welcome in the University community."
